Detective — An edge of the seat investigative thriller
Although talent is an indispensable commodity for an actor, what matters at the end of the day is the box office success of the films. After a streak of failures, Vishal is back with a crime thriller Detective which can be dubbed as an adaptation of Sherlock Holmes . Vishal plays the titular role in the movie. Produced by Vishal himself under Vishal Film Factory banner, the movie is directed by Mysskin.
The movie also casts Prasanna, Anu Emmanuel, Vinay, Andrea Jeremiah, Bhagyaraj.
Story, analysis, technicalities, and performances :
Adhvaitha Bhushan is a detective who is extremely fascinated by his profession and likes to get engrossed in his job. He gets an adrenaline rush in solving greatest mysteries of the city and goes haywire if he is idle or if the client’s case lacks the need for intellectual acuity. He solves uncomplicated cases in a jiffy, to be precise, the time it takes to solve the cases is less than what it takes for him to have a cup of green tea. Prasanna plays the role of his assistant and friend who lives with him in his apartment.
One day, Bhushan happens to stumble upon a school kid’s case which later leads to a punctilious investigation. The story becomes intriguing as a series of mysteries unfold with the help of the clues found at the spot of the crime incident, and eventually, the story turns out to be an edge of the seat thriller.
The movie starts at a slow pace and gets engaging leisurely. The first half of the film leaves all the dots of the big-time crime unfurled and the second half gets the momentum to push the movie in connecting all the unconnected dots of the crime. The way Bhushan deals with the case is interesting and the manner he catches hold of all the minute clues he finds in due course of the investigation makes the movie a gripping crime thriller.
The role seems like a tailor-made role for Vishal. Dressed in fitting formals with an ascot cap and a scarf around his neck, he looks perfect as a crime detective. He managed to get under the skin of the character. His attitude and screen presence throughout the movie are laudable. Vinay as Villian was excellent in a serious role. He looks apt as a classy antagonist. Andrea and Bhagyaraj played villain’s sidekicks. Anu Immanuel as Vishal’s love interest had nothing to offer in the movie except giving a crucial clue to the detective that helps him to trace out more details about the villain.
Vishal’s introduction scene in the movie is different from what you regularly get to see in Tamil or Telugu cinema. He runs frenzy here and there in search of his green tea . The interesting part here is that the camera does not show Vishal but shows what Vishal sees. The camera angle gives us a peek into the detective’ eyes. This scene also works as an example to show his zeal towards his profession. The screenplay of the movie is intact (barring few scenes in the first half) and it makes the movie enthralling. The cinematography and the BGM are the other highlights of the movie that played a crucial role in getting the audience absorbed into the crime mystery. The other interesting aspect in the movie is the use of science concepts in killing the people, which get revealed only in the process of the detective’s investigation. On the flip side, the movie lags at different places, and as mentioned it starts at a slow pace and has a dull love plot between the lead pair. It also seems unconvincing to see the detective finishing the regular cases so sharpish with his shrewdness, and at the same time, it remains puzzling to me that such an analytical detective fails to understand a vital clue given by the villain in a situation.
Overall, the movie is a delightful watch for people who love the crime thriller genre and a definite watch otherwise.
